Great seeing you at OBXBS last night Cliff. Many thanks for covering the ticket and beer. Big Daddy Love played until 1:30, I hit the road and rolled in around 3:15.

They did a killer American Sycamore/Circle Around The Sun jam to close up the show.

You missed the fight that started at the front door between some dumb drunk dude and his drunk girlfriend. He smacked her in the face and the bouncers took umbrage. "Umbrage" is North Cackalack for "bounce this douchebag's face off the concrete". The Kill Devil Hills Sheriff had him model some silver bracelets and he perp walked/stumbled to a chauffeured drive home.

Only one hairy spot on the trip home - about 4 miles from the NC/VA line a Currituck County Sherrif pulled a U turn in the middle of the highway and ran right up on my ass for about two miles. With nerves of steel I shit my pants and kept driving. He turned off just as I crossed the VA line.

For those of you - if any - wondering why ths was a big deal, I had left my wallet at home. My son called me when I was an hour and 15 minutes into an hour and a half drive and asked me if I thought I would need my wallet that I had left on top of the washer. Smart ass kid....wonder where he gets it. (Note: This closes the loop on the "stupid nuclear engineer" part of the thread title)

Wallet, money, license, ID, concealed carry permit......

Check out this version of Smoke -

For anyone still reading, here's a great SBD recording of Big Daddy Love - including a very cool take on Shakedown. Great band out of Winston-Salem, NC. Go see them.

Leave your wallet at home and Cliff will take care of you........

Ha! I had a feeling that things might get out of hand when the band played a typical second set as a first. Was actually expecting trouble at the Brewing Station, thats why a brought a bodyguard LMFAO!

Doesn't sound like a fun drive through Currituck with no I.D. in the pre-dawn hours, glad you didn't have to dust that deputy who might have pulled you over if he had another mile before the state line.

Thanks for the links. I was wondering if there were any soundboard recordings of BDL.

So what's the next very cool jam band you are going to hip me to?

I heard a poppy take recently, breathy lead vocals done à la young chanteuse, of Silver Jack. I thought I was having a flashback from Foxboro '87. I was happy for MC, but it was sooo bad.

And RB is confused folks. He meant to say track 2 (In Harmony) was the one to listen to. Or was it track 3...

;-)

As per our conversation last night...6:00 into track 7 of that SBD, no post '79 Grateful Dead performance of Shakedown can touch that...

Found this SBD MTX earlier today.....not bad at all.

Check tracks 8 and 11. I kinda dig Scott's vocals on both.

These guys are very tight. Wish I started listening to 'em earlier. I went straight to the encore from the above show, and Circle Around The Sun just about blew my face off. I could see the Stringdusters playing that song. Speaking of, you should check out the Hitchhiker from the show I was at last month. A nice He's Gone as well. Solid show, though I'm not sure they ever play a bad show.

BDL started playing FLoydFest 3 or 4 years ago and they were a huge crowd favorite - they won the Under the Radar contest and had 6 killer sets the following year - one on each stage, plus two VIP sets. Their cover of Vincent Black Lightning 1952 is mind blowing. American Sycamore, Mountain, Good Morning Sunshine...............all good. I also like the new lead singer better than the old, but they are both very talented.

I use this source for most of my Dusters listening. Every now and then their sound man sends me a soundboard recording every once in awhile. The same show on LMA, but usually a cleaner board.

Wow, these these guys are really @#%^@$ good & sound like they would be a blast to see live! Went to their website & lo & behold they're playing a gig in Miami Dec. 7th!

Woo-hoo! We don't get too many up & coming touring bands of this genre that make it this far south, so I'm really looking forward to it!!

I expect a full report - but I already know you are going to have a good time.

Make sure you stop and say hello to them all - Brian (banjo), Scott (acoustic, lead vocals), Joey (electric), Ashley (a wookie who plays bass) and Scotty (drums).

If you're familiar with many of their shows on archive would appreciate links to some of the better recordings!

Awesome. Thanks for the link. I never think to look on a band's own website, though it seems increasingly common now for free music to be there. And thanks for a good early morning laugh courtesy of that hypothetical situation involving you getting pulled over. Funny shit.

Your boy Suh just got pulled over though lol. Managed to avoid a suspension for that ninja groin kick, but just got clipped for reckless driving. It seems this guy is in trouble every month or so, whether it's on or off the field.

Damn. You know he ran the tags and knew you had a carry permit too. I just open carry for this & other reasons.

Glad you made it through unscathed with no more than a tale of continued Dead valor. Was a beautiful weekend for tunes!

Going to see DSO Wed. in Mars Hotel. Will look for BDL if they come through CHO.

That's the potentially scary part - the car is registered in Mrs. Mando's name. Mine isn't on the registration anywhere.....

"Uh, yes Deputy, this is my wife's car but I can't prove to you who I am. Oh yes, the two Sig Sauers in the holsters in the back are mine too. Along with the Baretta PSF. Yes, they're loaded. Yes, I know the Sigs have 18+1 mags. Yes, those are 147 grain Federal Hydra Shoks and Black Talon rounds. Yes I know the exit wound is 2000 times the size of the entry wound. But I am authorized to conceal in Virginia - and since North Carolina has CCW reciprocity with Virginia, I'm good. Except I can't show you that permit either. But hey, the AR is cased and the magazines, while full, aren't in. Yes I know that only drunks and criminals are on the road at 3AM. Please don't put the cuffs on too tight."

Been there. Hence the empathy. Last time my son & I got pulled I had the HK stuck in the seat by the console. Guy never said anything. I offered to sell him the Yukon though. I doubt they would give as positive reception to the AK.

Last time I got out of the vehicle with one strapped on they got a little testy. Did acknowledge that I was only exercising my constitutional rights, but would I please put it in the truck while we had our conversation?

I directly attribute my ability to remain calm under these type situations to all of my years of shakedowns at shows. Crucial psychological conditioning. They don't know how to take the long-hair look with the other.

We are just more Yankees to those Cackalacky boys as you know.
